Alzheimer's Disease and the SSD Process

The Social Security Administration will consider including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias for inclusion in the Compassionate Allowance Initiative. A decision is expected in a few months. Under the Compassionate Allowance Initiative, SSA considers certain conditions as serious enough to expedite a claimant's claim, and allow benefits. Alzheimer's disease is now one of those conditions that Commissioner Astrue with SSA will consider.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive and terminal illness. Due to the terminal nature of Alzheimer's disease, and the profound affect on one's ability to work with this condition, placement of this impairment on the Compassionate Allowance Initiative will help these claimants expedite their request for SS disability benefits.
